What happened at deadly Spanish border crush? – BBC News

New details have been uncovered about the fate of dozens of migrants who died trying to cross a border from Morocco into the Spanish territory of Melilla.

At least 24 people died in the crush at the crossing point – known as Barrio Chino – on 24 June, but the death toll is thought to be higher, with more than 70 still missing.

The BBC’s Africa Eye has uncovered evidence which raises new questions for the Moroccan and Spanish authorities about the event.

In the hours-long chaos, many of the migrants were beaten, and crushed between an 8m-high (26 feet) fence and Moroccan border guards, who deployed batons and tear gas.
